The museum is the former home of Captain Cicero Rufus Perry, an early Texas Ranger during the Republic years and afterwards. Originally born in Alabama, Rufus came to Texas with his parents, brother and sisters. During the time of the Texas Revolution, Rufus Perry, too young to fight at the age of thirteen, served in the Texas Army as a courier for General Sam Houston. Years later, Rufus became a Texas Ranger where he went on many adventurous campaigns with well known Texas Ranger Jack Hays. Although Rufus Perry is not a name that most people think of when they think of Texas Rangers; it is his survival from an Indian attack that stands out as one of the great legendary Texas Ranger stories. It exemplifies the courage and fortitude that was a common element of the lone protector of the Texas frontier.
